Yeah I paid $9 for my Ven. They grow quick too. I got mine at 3 inches, almost a year later he's nearing 10, maybe more.
That my good sir, is definitely sp. 'venezuela'. Like Clint said, strigata will have the occelated spot behind the pectoral fins, and generally have smaller spots on the faces. Vennz have 'longer' spots on the face, minus the occelated patch.
Strigata is also going to be close to $70 to $150 price range. Don't go by that though as some LFS will jack up the price on them just because, I've seen vennies go for $40 before at 3". A little crazy.
Expect them to have some crazy growth, and to pass the 'generic' size the LFS gave you. Crenicichla vittata and Crenicichla cincta are a couple of the limited number of pikes that get as large or larger than vennies.
