so many of the bigger plecs get rehomed or just given back to the lfs'

Most fancy Pterygoplichthys are worth more when they are smaller then when big (over 12inches) as it's hard to find buyers

but shouldn't the markings be bigger and broader

Not always, I've seen some get smaller as they get bigger. This seems about the normal size.
