the squares werent turned to were they look like diamonds is there any native snake with this type of pattern it wasnt a rattlesnake it was big maybe three feet long or 4 feet long and had no rattle

We're not going to be able to give you a definite ID without some photos. I don't know of any other large snakes in CA with a pattern like that.

Gopher snake care is similar to the care of kings, corns, milks, etc. The major difference is their size- they can reach 7 ft. or more and are heavy-bodied. So you'll need a bigger enclosure and larger food items than you would for the smaller colubrids.

people try to describe a snake to me all the time, but when i show them a picture of what they claim they saw, it is usually something completely different!

or when they get a pic to me, again, it's a totally different snake than what they described.

i'm not saying that your description is wrong, but i have never seen a snake with squares on its back in my entire life; not in pics or person.

nobody will be able to 100% correctly i.d. this snake for you unless you have a clear picture, so it's pretty much a waste of your time hoping for an answer.

i hope you see it again to take a picture, and good luck!

oh! here's a good field guide link to help you i.d the snake. http://enature.com/home/

i looked up the gopher snake and it had the same pattern but its head was flatter and somewat pointed ????

Gopher can flatten there head and look more like a rattler head.

I am guessing in southern cal you saw a paicfic or a San Diego gopher. They usually max out around 3-5 ft, around the length of a corn snake and body weight of a corn.

But from your decription it is only a guess.
