I think the reputation plecos have for being great cleaners is waaaaaaaaay misinterpreted.

Sure, some eat algae and help keep it down, BUT anybody with light/no substrate will know that they sure do crap a lot. So we now need a fish that'll eat their crap after they eat the algae

thats why you DO use substrate because its acts as an additional surface for decomposition and BB growth. and as long as you do water changes it matters little whether or not the crap is consumed.

When doing a water change your going to perform general maintenance to the tank eitherway which would include giving the glass a quick wipe down if you didnt have something feeding off the algae anyway - I now wipe down the glass eitherway due to the recent outbreak of hardalgae i'd got on the front of my glass.

i could care less to wipe down my glass. its a personal preference. like people who polish their cars.

hard algae is really easy to be rid of. just use a foothbrush.

and ive said before, scrubbing the glass or putting my hand over/moving objects around or in the tank scare the **** outta my exodons and they speed into the glass like pinballs which is bad for their health.

I was gonna post before/after pics but i put the pleco in before i thought about this and it cleared EVERYTHING overnight.

the tank literally had algae filled on all sides except the front (i did that on purpose not to spook exos). algae growing on my fake plants, algae growing on the hob cover i put in there as shelter..

put one small pleco in there and the next morning i walked downstairs and saw one satisfied pleco and i was actually shocked. NO aLGAE AT ALL. did as good of a job as using a scrub for every nook and cranny.

Even though i got no pics of before the tank was cleaned i decided i don't need to prove anything with pics, just try it for yourself and it will explain everything. if you leave your tank by the sun like i do and you get algae growth weekly, stop scrubbing, wait till it consumes the tank, add a pleco. nuff said.

Once again there is mis-information here.

The amount of waste is directly proportional to the species of pleco, the size of the pleco, and it's overall diet.

Waste comes in two forms. The base composition differs from ours, but you get the solid and liquid varieties.

If you see a buildup of pleco crap that indicates that a large amount of waste is being produced. That waste can be broken down and neutralized given enough time. However, the most viable method to remove fish waste comes from water changes, and substrate cleaning.

To suggest that it just breaks down on it's own fast enough irregardless of tank size, and fish population, is irresponsible.

I think the OP needs to do some basic research on water quality for aquariums.
