Do channel cats have stingers? Or is it the dorsal fin that is just sharp? A few people say they have Venom stingers on their sides but i have yet to get stung. What is the deal with these people and saying they have stingers an are weak venom.

I was always told they had stingers. I never would take them off the pole when we caught them. I grew up in a very very small town (250 people) and we went fishing in the river almost daily and caught lots of channel cats. I dont know how true it is about the stingers though.

They're not stingers, per se. Channel cats have a mild venom in their pectoral and 1st dorsal ray spines.

Agreed :) and they hurt for a week!!!

Heres something weird.....If one stings you rub the stung part on the catfish. It actually helps the pain..:nilly:

Hmm.....fish slime or urine......descisions descisions. xD
Isn't urine to help jellyfish?

But is it a poke from the fine or just a rub? i grab mine today and he slid pass my hand and i freaked. but didn't feel a thing. O.o? Some people think its the barbs that are Stingers O.o and don't touch them.

The venom is a protein that breaks down rapidly in high temps. If stung, dip the affected part in water as hot as you can tolerate, or place a hot compress on the area, for 10-20 minutes. That should break the venom down enough to make the pain in the injured area tolerable.

But how does it happen. can it just be from a brush up on the side. or does he have to freak out and run into u with that little gun?
