those fish are critically endangered. The american bambusa?

Could be one of the worlds largest Minnows, and I believe they are bigger than Mahseer which would make them the biggest predatory minnow.

Absolutely fascinating. I can't believe I've never heard of these before, though I'm not entirely surprised as I'm from the southeast.

This is a fish that will likely intensely hold my interest over the next few days.

I reluctantly move this thread to NA Natives.

These appear to be a victim of tremendous overfishing the the same vein as blue catfish; the genetic lineages that supported the huge specimens now appear to be extinct. Sixty years ago, it was not unheard of to see a 100 pound pikeminnow and in the nineteenth century it was fairly common to see one.

Now, an adult, sexually mature fish is considered to be grown at about two feet and five pounds.

This is an example of human interference affecting the natural history and development of a species. With humans selectively and consistently removing the largest members of a population, the smaller specimens are the ones who are able to pass on their genes. Over time, the lineages that supported very large specimens are lost. This is quite sad to me; I had no idea such a large, dynamic predator existed in the US.

Good night people, blue cats are NOT extinct. I DID NOT say they were extinct. I said the genetic lineages that allowed the fish to reach 200+ pounds like they did in the 1800s and earlier is extinct.
