hi everyone,
I have a male nimbochromis fuscotaeniatus that is currently about 7 inches. i have had him for about 16 months, and i'd say he was around 2 inches when i bought him. any idea whether or not his rate of growth in that time seems reasonable? also how large do they normally top out at? I have heard everything from 10 to 14 inches and i am just wondering what to expect out of him. his diet consists of hikari cichlid excel, aquatrol spirulina flakes, frozen bloodworms, mysis shrimp, and krill. does this seem adequate for this species? thanks in advance for any answers, advice, or suggestions

i have tow mails and two females about the same same size as your guy.The guy i bought my nimbochromis fuscotaeniatus's he told me they get as big as 16-17''....if you ever wanna sell yours let me know...i like to put him in my 500gl...cichlid tank

Nimbochromis Fuscotaeniatus males grow to 10" I really doubt they will grow to 12"
Most males won't grow to 10" though. Either he has killed himself fighting other fish by then, or the owner got rid of them as they get very difficult to handle at these sizes.

My own fusco male was a selection of differents groups of fry. And was selected at size and color for breeding. He got about 7 years old and when he was dead I measured him at 26cm or 10" and a little. This is from the top of the nose till the end of the tail. This fusco has died of old age/natural causes and had been kept in a 1300 liter(~360gallon) tank his whole life and been properly fed.

All the fish I have kept until now mostly got larger than average due to strict water refresh and feeding schedule.

This was him at the prime of his life. I believe he was about 6 years old here.

He was a beauty wimm's

wimmels, that fish is just unbelievable! sorry to hear he's gone now, but my God what a beautiful fish! thanks for the amazing pictures and the info. i am just wondering, since this is my first one, what makes them so difficult to deal with at that size...is it just their aggressiveness or did you encounter other problems? also, mine currently has the blue head and occasional flashes of the blue/green in his body, but i have an electric blue johanni in the tank who is still the dominant male...if i remove the johanni, will that be enough to bring out his best color, or should i consider adding a female or two?

Thanks for the compliments.

Its pure their aggression. If you give yours time to grow it will get dominant by himself.

I believe that if you can keep a Fusco succesfully you can keep any malawi cichlid. I have kept no malawi untill now that can be as destructive as these fish. And I have kept a lot, various buccochromis, tyrannochromis and champsochromis

My fusco is rather timid right now at 5". We'll see how that goes though as he grows. LOL

I think picking off tankmates is the biggest problem with them as they grow..
