I've had my 4 N. haitiensis in split quarters for over a year; for the past few months in an egg-crate divided 75 gallon. I noticed that one of the females attacked the magnet glass cleaner when I was cleaning the glass. She's one of the females who lives next door to the male in the tank.

It appears as though they spawned through the egg-crate today. I doubt the eggs are fertile since she laid them on a rock about 2 inches away from the egg-crate. I'll take the divider out if they prove to be infertile, so next time he'll be able to get to them. The female in the adjacent section will be a good dither. In sight but out of reach.

The good news is that after over a year of carefully growing them out as to not have them kill each other I am fairly certain I have a good pair bond. I've wanted a pair for quite a number of years.

Why wouldn't it bew able to happen because of an egg crate. Fish sperm travels with water, it will fertilize them anyway.

Well the rock where she laid them is well out of his reach. He must have some really good swimmers because there's a 6" bubble bar pulling the water away from the spawn site. I'm not saying it's impossible, but it surely didn't look probable. I'm hoping for the best. So far so good. She's fanning and guarding them.

This is my first haitiensis spawn, but I've bred cichlids for over 30 years.

I'll bet they were successfully fertilized.
Don't dispare if after 48 hours they look all fungal, at the same time they hatch, fungus gets going fast, and the parents will hide the wriggler fry for as long as 4 days before free they become swimming. Keep the temp up a bit, low to mid 80s.

I will buy some fry if you are selling. pm me

Apparently, his swimmers weren't strong enough. No signs of any fry whatsoever. This weekend I'm taking the divider out between the two of them. I've been sick the past week or so with a bad cold, so I haven't gotten to it. I wanted to give her a few days to see if the fry showed up too. I have no doubts that they'll get busy again.

I'd love to find 2 more males for my other two females. That's like winning the lottery though from what I've seen. If anyone has them, they usually don't want to part with them. I know I don't want to part with my 2 extra females. They take so long to grow out.

Good luck w/ the next batch!
