Hey,
As a present from me... to me I just ordered 4 Nandus nandus.
Imo this species is the perfect alternative to Datnioides.
And since I am not able to get a D.polota or Undecimradiatus which would be the only species I'd be able to house in a 6ft x 2ft tank I just took the chance to get Nandus nandus.

I'll upload some pictures when they arrive!

I have always liked nandus and I have even had them with small dats from time to time.My issue with them is they are even harder than dats to train onto pellets!....mine would only eat small fish that were foolish enough to get close to them.BTW,why can't you get those dat species that you mentioned?

Hey,
this wouldn´t be a big deal since I´ve got several 50gal tanks which I am using to seperate new fish for quarantine and to try to make them accept the food I offer.
Every fish I bought from this shop would accept bloodworms so I hope that´s the same for those wild caught Nandus nandus.

Well the reason why I can´t buy those dats is that there are very few real polota and undecimradiatus in the trade right now.
One big importer imported "Polotas" but those are just sadly all mislabeled Microlepis.
Because it´s not just the "Polotas" from the guy I bought the fish shown in the thread.
Even the shop I am buying most of my fish at showed me a picture of the "Polotas" he´s got.
But those are not Datnioides polota!

Oh yes,I understand now.....the good old species mislable....seen it plenty of times.

Sadly it´s not just the case with Datnioides.
It happens with Mastacembelidae as well especially with those belonging to the Armatus-complex (armatus, favus, dayi, tinwini).

The one shown on the picture i uploaded in the last reply should be a Microlepis, right?

I agree, many fish are mislabeled in shops as well as on online dealer's lists.
I can recall a particularly egregious case at a shop years ago in which a mangrove snapper was labeled as a red finned datnoid.....and yes,the fish in the photo is Datnioides microlepis.

I've seen bluegill labeled as cichlids, many mislabeled cichlids, koi labeled as goldfish, etc etc etc the list goes on

Koi labeled as goldfish.....now that's just flat out wrong.

Hey,
I've got one more question about Nandus nandus:
Are those fish growing fast?
Im getting small ones, about 5-7cm in length.

Meanwhile it's 90% safe that I'll buy the 180cm x 60cm tank.
I'm not sure about the stocking yet.
My Mastacembelus dayi and Mastacembelus armatus favus will move in also my three Polypterus delhezi when they are big enough (atm about 12cm in my 150cm tank).
I'd love to keep the 4 Nandus nandus in there as well after they reached their full size.

But that's it for now.
Maybe I could keep a school of Chromobotia macracanthus in there?
But I'm not sure about it. I've seen one with 30cm in length.
To be honest I am absolutely happy with the fish I am keeping at the moment.
Another "dream" would be Astronotus occelatus which will not fit in the new tank as well.
The Microlepis will live in there until I'll find someone who's able to keep it.
But as I said: I am not going to keep it.
In my opinion the tank's too small.
