Several months ago, some of our family cleaned out my grandfather's lab (he was a pharmacist)-some parts of which hadn't been touched since he died in 1980-and I brought home several antique glass containers (that's what fishkeeping has done to me, I see a glass container and immediately start contemplating stock) among other things. I have 2 5 gallon distilled water jugs, but they were used for something other than distilled water, so they need a good cleaning. I also have lots of smaller containers.

The plan is to start off with a one gallon jug with a handful of lowlight plants so that I might be able to get away with them surviving off of ambient light. Obviously there will be no fish in this setup, but a few snails and maybe shrimp. If I'm successful with this one and can get one of the 5 gallons clean, I'd like to try one of those as well. So what do you guys think? Will it work?

as long as theres not medicine in it or something it will work.
i have 2 shrimp in a planted 1 gallon container

Go for it! Just make sure you do a thorough cleaning of the container, but there's no reason why you couldn't do a nano set up in one of those jugs! Cool idea! Make sure to post pics if you can! :headbang2

I don't think this container was ever used for anything besides water. The glass is crystal clear and it had no odor, but I rinsed it like 30 times anyway. I set it up today with some Eco-Complete with a layer of clay underneath. I added a few small river stones and fragments of driftwood that I could fit through the top of the jug. I don't currently have many plants going, but I added a little bit of hornwart and a small crypt and added 3 MTS and a ramshorn. I'll be in Columbus tomorrow, so I'll stop at a fish store there and pick up a few more low-light plants to try. If the plants and snails do well, I also might get a small group of some type of shrimp.

If you get shrimp I recommend amano shrimp and crystal reds - and post a pic so we know what you're talking about.

If I do get shrimp, I was thinking about cherry reds (I've had them before and liked them) and bee shrimp (wild type of the crystal reds, the bluish color will be a nice contrast with the red of the others). If the plants/inverts do well and I can get the other jug clean, I'd also like to scale this up to a 5 gal size as well. And here's a pic of it so far.

I'd like to get some sort of thin column of driftwood for the center and add some more plants. I think it will be good for viewing little shrimp because the curvature of the glass magnifies everything (check out the ramshorn in the top right-he's not nearly as big as he looks in pic)

That's awesome - and cherry reds would be perfect. I don't know if adding more plants would be a good idea for right now. Maybe try what you have and see if it grows out a bit.

looks cool

I added a small java fern and a little java moss to see if I can get a little covering on the wood and rocks-basically some place for baby shrimp to hide. That will be it for the plants.
