My new clown loach is pretty inactive- he spends the majority of the time in a corner laying on the sand. He lays on a side, gently fanning his tail, but will get up and swim when someone approaches the tank from that side. Is this normal behavior? I've read that some CLs lay down on their sides, but mine stays there for such prolonged periods that it has started to concern me. Thanks in advance.

My father as 7 in a tank and they will wedge themselves in between horizontal rocks and lay on each other (on their side). They do this most of the day and only really can be seen when feeding time is near.

if it's eating well and would move from that position when you go near it then it should be fine. you have to get your cl some buddies so it'll be more active.

Its always a hoot when new clown owners get paranoid because of the day sleeping. If you only have 1, then 4 more should be right down your alley.
Loaches always 'sleep', but the second you try and snap some pics of it up close, they speed off like a crim at a bank robbery.

Nice to hear you're getting a laugh at my expense. :D It used to be interesting, but always seeing him laying there is a little unsettling. As for more coming, a pair will join him the next time I get out to the LFS.

Thanks for the responses everyone!

I have been scared a few times when I glance in the tank and see just one of my loaches laying on it's side.

When they tip over and snooze it's tough to tell if they're napping temporarily or permanently. I haven't had a loach die in my tank in almost a year, but one did manage to jump out.

I have been lucky up this point...though a couple of mine have been eaten...I think.

Do you just have one? They do a lot better in a group.
