I have a little experience with cars on track too, but it just seems very obvious that going in a circle takes much less skill than a typical road course would, with the extreme handling and braking involved. I just can't wrap my head around the whole nascar thing.
 
I don't see how it can take less skill. With everyone doing the same thing over and over again, there is less variables, and less room for error. While the course may be less challenging, that makes the driving more challenging. It puts the challenge into vehicle set up and driving skill. Shaving seconds. They're not just "going in circles". They're trying to go in circles faster than the guy in front of them while holding off the guy bumping from behind... With nothing more than driving skill keeping them from going directly to the rear. It's not about the course. It's about holding off the competition. Regardless of the course.

NASCAR is 95% full throttle, they hardly have brakes, its all about drafting, turning and not oversteering and crashing, it definitely has its challenges! Regardless all racing is challenging, even karting is very difficult!

But when it comes to the most challenging, and extreme motorsport, hands down f1, only the best drivers around the world that work their way up their whole life have maybe a 1% chance of even being a test driver! NASCAR, f1, autocross, karting, motogp, rally,outlaws, dirt etc all has incredible skill involved, just saying no motorsport should be sold short!

No matter what racing you do, your life is on the line!

Yea its nuts, going 200mpg on a 20 degree grade makes your rear end extremely light and the chance for oversteer is likely.

Top gear dissed NASCAR for years, then they did a special that showed how tough it actually is!

I happen to hav grown up with and kno one of the drivers in sprint cup, Paul Menard (no, he's not the best lol). The main challenge to Nascar is keeping up with competition thru drafting, and having enough balls to push your car to absolute max around the long left turns, without breaking loose and into the wall...very easy to do at 180mph. I've never raced oval, only some experience on road courses. Do kno they completely different types of racing. Formala 1 can b considered road racings extreme. Ever see how much those drivers struggle when transition to Nascar? Not as easy as they make it look. As for the main topic, Jeff Gordon, never been a fan. Guy has been pulling cheap moves like that for many yrs...its no shock what he did, seems to b in his nature

Don't get me wrong... The only thing I'm discrediting here is the misconception that going fast, turning left takes no skill. Let me put it this way... Most of the passing in racing goes on in the challenging parts of the track. Take away the challenging parts, you are left with relying on driver skill and vehicle setup to get you to the front. Also, let me point out that Juan Pablo Montoya went from winning F1 races to a few years of running around in 30-something-th position in NASCAR. It took him a few years to start doing well consistently, but like you said, it is different. It is a different skill. Not less, not more, just different.

Personally, I haven't raced in a few years. I used to race enduros at local tracks. It's cheap, fun, and LOTS of contact. But, recent financial limitations and a new hobby in competitive shooting have left me out of racing lately.

I'm not a total hater on nascar, but to me, watching F1 cars or MotoGP racing is much more entertaining by a long shot. To me, those two are the pinnacle of motorsport racing. Each his own I guess though. And I think the complete opposite, whereas the more challenging or complex the task at hand, the harder it is and more entertaining to watch and understand what these drivers/riders are doing. Going 200 mph isn't really that hard, but if you throw a 90 degree turn in there, that makes it a lot harder, and much more demanding on the brakes, suspension, and driver/rider. A slightly banked gradual left turn every lap, meh. I'll watch golf before that. :ROFL: Actually any competition I enjoy watching, but nascar does not keep me on my toes like other forms of racing.
 
Yea and to think he just climbed right out is amazing! F1 has set the safety standards for all racing, abs, tcs, Hans device, mono comb cockpits, crumple zones and 6 point harness are all relative to f1 development, when dale died in NASCAR awhile back NASCAR mandated the use of the Hans device, hard to believe before then it was optional..... but f1 invented it, and many features in road cars these days are from f1 technology because the engineers push the boundaries and some things are so genious (like abs/tcs) that they implement them in road cars.

I think we need to start a motor sport thread, I could go on for days and days.


Everybody should watch the AMERICAN GRAND PRIX IN AUSTIN TEXAS THIS WEEKEND, 2007 was the last time f1 came to America, luckily I live in indy and was there for that race and many others, broke my heart when they killed the contract with indy! But yea, brand new track, and its going to be awesome!
