Nasty combination, Is this possible?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I wouldn't try it.Don't think the Dovii will let anyone else in their territory for long

cichlids seem to ingnore polys, but i dont think the 180 will be enough for the pair long term

In my experience, parachromis are among the most aggressive cichlids and are particulary aggressive towards other parachromis. I would not advise mixing them in a small tank, especially one with such light stocking. (no others to spread aggression)
As for the arowana, it really depends on your dovii pairs attitude. I can see some dovii living with arowna others not tolerating them at all. Cichlids generally ignore arowana, but a pair of dovii will most likely attack anything in the tank.
Tankmates I'd suggest for a dovii pair:
hardy catfish (small plecos, raphael, etc...NO north aerican catfish)
polypterids
barbs, large tetra/danio
silver dollars
maybe convicts

I'd say try it minus the managuense, you may luck out. Make sure you have a tank on hand and watch them closely, chances are if a fight breaks out the arowana will not recover. Best of luck!

My 2 foot silver aro and my male umbee who was about 12 inches were always going at each other in a 230.
The umbee got along with a bigger jag but still ruled the tank.
I wouldnt try it as the arowana bit the umbee, and he ended up getting infected and dying. Long term, the Dovii would destroy the arowana.
If I put my arowana and my Dovii together, the aro wouldnt be alive much longer than 5 minutes.

Hey guys,

Im glad to have consulted with you guys, rather then taking a risk by buying a very expensive fish and potentially find it one day totally demolished!

Thank you all for the valued input :)

Cheers.

Dovii - especially males - are highly territorial and very intelligent. I wouldn't try tank mates with a BREEDING pair in anything less than a 8x2x2 tank.

Well, the thought has already crossed my mind to return the Golden Pleco. At the moment, the pleco is undisturbed. I mean initially both Dovii tried to prevoke a reaction out of him, but they got no where.

Btw, fish sizes at the moment include:

Dovii m 21cm, f 16cm
Pleco 32cm

You may run into issue's with the pleco trying to eat eggs when they do spawn - although pleco's are armored fish I think a male can do a very good job of tearing one up.

Keep an eye on them - best bet would be to add some sort of night light so the dovii can protect their brood when they do start to spawn to prevent the pleco from getting to a point of being killed, if that makes sense.

Still males can be vicious and yours sound like they're fairly young yet. :)

What your saying makes perfect sense :)

Put it this way, if and when the Dovii spawn - the pleco will be removed period.

Yes, the Dovii are quite young at the moment (give or take a year old). But I keep a very close eye on all my fish in the tank. On a daily basis I inspect my fish and look for signs of battle scars.

Some one you may also want to speak with - that you can actually talk to in real time on an almost nightly basis - is Pam Chin. You can find her over in the chatroom at www.cichlid-forums.com almost every night, and she is a living encyclopedia when it comes to fish. I know she cares for dovii (she has over 20,000 gallons in her house) so she can probably give you good advice on what to expect in the future - and possible tank mates considering your tank :)
