National Geographic: Snakeheads

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I understand the issues and over concern regarding snakeheads in terms of outcompeting native wildlife (however true it may be). I was wondering if there is also concern over hybridization of the fish with native fish and if so, what would they cross with and where can I get one!!!

There is no concern for hybridization with invasives from other countries because they typically aren't closely related enough to spawn with our natives. However it is a concern when species from the same continent are moved to other parts of the continent that they weren't native to. For example. Brook trout are a species native to the Eastern portion of North America. Bull trout are native to the Western. Brook trout have been introduced into the west and now as a result are spawning with the bull trout and destroying their gene pool.
