After dreaming of going collection for native species I finally plunged in! For the past two days Ive been away fishing with my cousin in hoped of finding some nice small fish to bring back with me. I have usually been not so sure about how humane this process is, though I assure you that these fish will be provided with a wonderful home. We went to two loactions, the local river in Ashdown, Arkansas, fishing was bad this day and we ended up only catching two fish, which I believe are a species called 'cropee' (spelling). They were both very niced size fish. On our second collection, we went to a pond on my grandfathers property which many people come around to fish at this great catching spot! There we got, two large mouth bass (far too large to bring back), 12 'perch'; one of which I brought back. I really hope that they do well and heal up from hooking and nets.

Im wanting to know if it would be possible for someone here to give me a positive identification on the three fish I brought back with me and some information in regards to the species if possibly. When I got home with the fish I placed them in a small 10 gallon aquarium for the next few nights while I medicate them with aquarium stress and watch for disease. In a few days they will be moved to their own 55 gallon aquarium. The two 'cropee' I caught are very different colors which makes me think I may have a male and female, they are amazing looking fish! Im getting so envolved in fishing for natives now, that im actually going back tommorow! It is wonderful to be able to fine such nice looking fish in my area! I have some pictures below and am wondering if the 10 gallon aqurium will hold them for a few days, please let me know what you think and possibly give me some inforamtion on the species and care tips or and other information.

Thank you for your replies!

That tank is way too small, but they will survive with water changes daily on the short term. Very nice fish!

Spelled Crappie. Totally unrelated to the Centrarchidae species "Crappy" which I keep in a porcelain "bowl".

Yes, its obviously only for a few days. The fish are acting great and swimming active around the aquarium. I didnt understand the last statment you made.

Are these nice fish, any information? What about the different coloration?

Identification researched and proven to be white and a black crappie. Im considering collection a few more blue gill for the 55g as i usually see them schooling in the wild. What do you guys think about these fish?

Any more and you will overload the 55g.

i have to agree its not fair to keep wild caught fish in anything less then a 150g tank the stress from diet change their breeding areas gone now water conditions are different this will cause them many stress related diseases
try to get a bigger tank and net some fry after spawning make sure you get some small speices like perch if they grow in a large tank they will do fine..

also watch your bylaws about removing wild fish for captive use

Yes, I think the 55 will be too small. In regards to sport fishing these are small fish, but in regards to aquariums these are large fish. In a good environment both the crappie and the blue gill can push 12 ", and they may not take anything but live food since that is what they are used to in the wild.
