Use a gold hook when fishing for minnows/shiners. Also a casting net would get you a lot more quicker than the rod.

either that or build a minnow trap. check youtube, there are several options, wide mouth bottles cut the top and invert into the bottle, weigh it down toss in some corn, bits of corn, peas, leftovers etc. Let it soak for a few hours, pull up minnows, crayfish, other critters.
