Native fish or other cichlids with Tiger Oscar in a 75g?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I've done the two Oscars in a 75 thing. Be prepared to do massive and frequent water changes. Otherwise, I had no real problems. Grew them out together and they got along famously.

Oscar alone in a 75 is still not a lot of room. If your set on that tank size, just keep one fish.

I agree, because a 75 gal is about the size of truck sized rut (puddle) in the road.
The rule, that I adhere to in my own tanks is (especially if you are going to have more than 1 fish in a tank) is 10 gallons of water (space) per inch of fish.
So a 75 gal, is only big enough for two or three 7.5 inch fish.
Your oscar (by my rule of thumb), is already too big for a 75.

Keep him alone in the 75.
My amph is about 10" and I feel like his 75 too small. I will be upgrading when I move.

Tank size aside....
Im surprised nobody mentioned temperature. When I kept NA natives I had my tank in the basement and kept temps under 70°.

But I suppose that you could find a happy medium where both fish would be happy.

From experience, an oscar of that size will never tolerate another cichlid in that tank. He is used to being the only alpha male, so unless you can get a larger aquarium I would keep him solo. For the record, I've never had an oscar get along with any type of catfish either. The reason why I sold my oscar was so I could get different fish, and with him still there that wasn't happening.

Personally I feel a 75 is too small for an Oscar, but I'm not going to preach any further on that matter. However, I am curious to know of what your future plan is with that large mouth bass?

The bass, along with the other natives in the pond, will go to a co workers pond which is much larger. I'd love to keep him but it seems it's not in the cards right now.

Yeah, it probably doesn't help that I've fed him live fish/tadpoles since he was little so he might think anything in the tank with him is food.

He's been a great fish though........great personality(runs up to the glass whenever I come near and opens his mouth wide lol) but I thought a 75g would be enough for another fish of similar size.

And I already plan to do weekly 50-75% water changes if that changes anything.

IMO, a 75 should be large enough for one solo considering a standard 75 is 18'' wide. Ideally a larger tank would be better, but if you have already bought the 75 you can make it work. Just keep up with water changes like you said.

Oscars are awesome fish, I miss mine every now and then.

I haven't bought the 75 yet. I decided on the size after doing a good amount of research and getting advice from local fish stores (not large chains either.....small speciality shops).
