Where do you guys get native fish?
I'd definately love to keep a few native fish someday so I'm just curious.
Can you keep native fish in smaller tanks like a 20 gallon tank?

you are gonna have to be more specific about "native". USA doesnt give us a whole lot to work with.

You could keep a few bluegills in a 20 or maybe a couple perch in a 20 gallon.

Bluegills and perch will outgrow a 20g in short time. If you are into sunfish, look at orangespotted sunfish or dollar sunfish. For smaller species, look into bluespotted or blackbanded sunfish. For even smaller species, look into pygmy sunfish.

There are a number of killifish and shiners that you could keep in a 20g long as well.

What are you interested in?

No bluegill will not outgrow a 20 gal.. and I met a guy who had a 13'' perch in a 20 gal he caught it when it was real small and raised it its whole life and lived for around 10 years in a 20 gallon just fine.

*sigh* I'm not going to argue with you... If you think that is right, then so be it.

Bluegill will grow to 12"+. Have fun keeping a few of them in a 20g.

Well I live where its colder so I hardly ever see bluegill over 8'' here. NEVER anything over 12!!! In a home aquarium I wouldn't think my bluegill would endup being a new state record! haha

Thanks for the info guys. I'm from Pennsylvania kyleking007.
So you guys didn't really say where you got your native fish from.
I was hoping for something a little nicer looking and interesting than mosquito fish lol. Could I keep any native fish in a 20 gallon high tank instead? The 20 gallon I have is a 20 gallon high. Not that I plan on getting natives anytime soon since I've got small fancy goldfish in the 20 gallon right now. I was thinking when the goldfish outgrow the 20 gallon their in now i'd rehome them and get some natives instead. But that's gonna be a while.

drewish, The sunfish look beautiful. I love sunnies. I like the orange spotted sunfish but I would probably want to get the bluespotted sunfish since he gets about 3 to 3.5 inches instead of 5 inches like the orange spotted sunfish.
