Hey guys ive got a new tank (38 gallons) and wanna try natives ive got a couple questions?

Can natives like with tropicals? (only Corydoras)
What types of fish would be suited for my tank size?
If i decided to plant the tank would they rip it up?
If i dirted the tank would they sift through the tank and disturb the substrate?

i was thinking of making a minnow trap and catching a baby bluegill or catch a small one with the smallest hooks i have
what do you guys think?
im going Saturday to collect so hurry! ;);)

If you have bronze corydoras, they should be fine with natives as bronze corydoras do well at the room temperatures. Darters, Fundulus species (killifish/topminnow), madtoms, minnows, daces and shiners making excellent community fishes and they should be fine with corydoras and most aquatic plants.

Do not bring sunfish or any baby gamefish/roughfish home if you cannot house them when they get bigger....not mentioned that they might will eat corydoras.

Although 38g tanks are very nice (I like the Bowfronts) a 38g is too small for most sunfish only the Orangespotted, Bantam, and Enneacanthus species would thrive in that size of a tank; I believe you guys have Banded sunfish in your area which would be nice in a 38g along with madtoms and topminnows like Rebel suggested; another option would be sheepshead minnows which are in the southern portion of Mass.

Then you have a limited selection of native predatory fishes for your 38gal and I doubt that you would like these micropredatory fishes. Mudminnows, scuplins and pirate perch would be perfect for 38gal and they are predatory fishes. Perhaps some large Fundulus species such as Mummichogs and Studfish can take small fishes and there's some predatory chubs such as Creek Chubs.

then I would search on general aquatic discussions or other monster fish forums, however I would recommend channa bleheri, also known as the rainbow snakehead. However, I would keep it alone

Mudminnows and Sculpins are incredibly predatory...and Ive heard Mummichogs are little bad motorscooters also, by the way the Banded Sunfish in Mass is also predatory and will eat small insects, larvae and very small fish (little guppies, baby minnow etc) its just not the meanest fish around.
