Native Florida Fish for a 30 Gallon

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
You have lots of nice killifish down your way too; most killies do well in captivity in my experience. You might also consider going brackish; lots of neat small brackish fish around both coasts of FL, including more killies, gobies, blennies, sleepers, mollies, flatfishes, etc.

Yeah there are some smaller killis, like the blue-finned killifish around here that are supposed to be pretty neat-o. I think I have quite a few options once I move these honduran red points out of the tank, but honestly, I think I will stay freshwater. I don't have much insight into successfully running a brackish tank, and I feel like I may have to recycle everything/etc. and mess up the feng shui of my tank as it is! We will see, but those dollar sunfish and bluespotted sunfish are pretty awesome-looking. Those and a few killis or pretty minnows would be great. I won't get too optimistic with the madtoms, but if I can get ahold of a native cat or two that doesn't get mondo for a 30gal (like a bullhead that I would have to let go very quickly because of size), I would be ecstatic.

I like bluefin killies a lot, but they stay pretty small - only 1.5" max. I've found golden topminnows a lot, and both sexes are quite pretty - the males get pretty spectacular! They max out at 3" - perfect for a 30 (start with small ones, they acclimate better). Seminole killifish are pretty common, get a bit larger, but will do well also. Dollars are present in our area, but are really hard to find. I've had much better luck picking up the bluespots, and they are also much less aggressive - makes for a better community tank.

When your tank is ready, PM me. I know some good spots for stuff.
