Native food for a Gar?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
honestly, i us a castnet with 3/16 inch mesh (illegal) and catch small mimnows and creekchubs also very young bluegill .25-.5" long. Also, i just just bought a Florida gar last week and he is 12" but they are very different from spotted gar.
what different?

Live feeding is ok but all run the risk of diseases at some point. Also feeders do not have a great nutritional factor. However feeding you gar native food will not hurt it. I think the best diet for your gar would be a mix of live and cut bait or commercial fish food, 20%, 80% respectively. This will insure that your gar will have proper nutrition. There are many threads in the forum about weaning gar off of live feeders, just use the "search" option.

I QT my feeders as much as possible and gut-load them with a high quality flake, but I also worm my gar every 6 monthes or so as a percaution.

De-worming or Parasiting every 6 months is a seriously bad idea, Un-needed and full of potential issues and problems.

So I am about to purchase a Florida gar and I have been reading that young gars always need food at hand. I really don't want to feed guppies or anything from the store because of diseases and I was wondering if I could feed him shiners, smelts, crayfish etc native to the North East region? Do these carry diseases often? Do I quarantine them if I trap them from a lake? because they are in freezing cold temps and in my tank its 76 F I don't know if that will effect my gar... Please provide Info!!

In general feeding your fish species caught straight from the wild is far far far better than "feeders" from the LFS.. This is typically what I do when I feed live feeds. There is risk with anything but in the case of immediately feeding wild-caught prey items the risk is far lower than with any LFS obtained item.
