Yep its definately a darter...I dont know what kind....you might want to check and make sure its not an endangered species...you can get in alot of trouble for keeping those.

Agreeing with ShadowBass here, your buddy is Etheostoma flabellare. Further can be confirmed by the fact that there are no other "haircut first dorsal" darters in Ohio (there are several lookalikes in other states, many of which are endangered/threatened). I love the look of fantails - besides being hardier than most other darters, the males look like little rock star fishes, becoming jet black during mating season in addition to that crew-cut dorsal, and being bigger+more aggressive than other Etheostoma darters. Nice find!

Thanks. I'm excited to see how this guy turns out. He is already very responsive to me even though I've only had him for a month.

He's beautiful. I'm sad that we don't have any right around here. I'll just have to find some when I go to visit my parents in Ohio.

Are you sure ShadowBass? According to this "The Fishes of Missouri" (we use this book for Iowa fishes too :P) Fantail Darters should be found around your location.
