My house is across the street from a huge river basin. I have an empty 150g and I’ve been toying with the idea of just catching some of the river fish and putting them in the tank. Any idea if that could work? I’m not sure how I could best mimic the water parameters.

Welcome aboard
First make sure it is legal in the area to collect. May just need to have a inexpensive permit such as a fishing license. Parameters should not be difficult to achieve since the ph of of the water from tap should match or be very similar to the river. If your tap water comes from a water treatment facility all you need to do is treat with a Dechlorinator such as prime.
If this is your first time setting up any aquarium learning about the Nitrifying Cycle of an aquarium is crucial in fish keeping.

+1 should be able to keep the native fish but not the invasive. Welcome fellow Floridian.

Very familiar with nitrogen cycle thankfully! I’ve kept fish for years but this is my first large tank. I have a huge bottle of prime so I should go ahead and start working on getting the tank ready since it takes a good while

Trying to decide between a native tank and an interesting oddball tank

I personally decided to setup a native aquarium myself. Setup a 20 long with a few Rainbow Darters native here in Ohio rivers. I did lose a few due to high temperature of the aquarium water. Been setup a little over a year now.

Did you collect them yourself or did you buy them locally
