hey guys my native tank is way to hot and i have no clue why its only been like in the 70s here and its like 80 degrees my fish are really dull in color compared to when they are in colder water and i want them to be healthy and happy but no way i can afford a chiller so what should i do i can take out like any ammount of water everyday and replace it with cold water if i need to do that i think that is my only option i can think of i cant run and air conditioner in this room either so anyone have any ideas on what i could do let me know thanks im going to probably take a large ammount of water tonight and replace it with cold water

how big of a tank?

i cool my cold water tanks with a decent size window flan blowing down on to the surface of the water on high.....you will lose allot of water to evaporation this way but that is what is keeping your tank cool^_^

not while my tanks are to hot no..lids trap in heat.

ok so i would say ...as many box window fans as you can face down across your tank. to keep a 150 cool that way, that is allot larger than I have cooled with a fan

most of my natives are bottom dwellers....ahah well most of my fish bottom dwellers *

What's the temp inside your house?

Like 75 I drained half the tank and replaced it with cold water their colors still look washed out the black crappies don't even look black when I first got them they were beautiful is this because of the temp of the tank?

I really don't think it is the temp IMO. My native tanks besides one don't have any form of temperature control and the one I have a heater in is set at 82 and the colors are normal. Native fish tend to change colors a lot throughout the day, I think it's because of light and stress. If the light is too bright it can cause stress on the fish making their colors fade. Mine also tend to become colorless after they eat. There are many factors that can cause loss of color but it is not permanent.

Oh okay hmm well I hope they can start getting the colors they had when I first got them so you have the temp at 82?

My little 30 gallon grow out tank that has 6 bluegills is set at 82 degrees because I have some tropical fish in there that need to have a water temp of 72-84 so I just keep it at 82. Plus the bluegills are growing faster at a higher temp (did a little experiment).

Oh okay its just the two big black crappies I have that have really dull color maybe its because they are new? I have no clue but they were in two gallons of water before they went in the 150 and there colors were awesome in the small am mount of water that's what has me confused
