Natives tank 1000 gallon tank?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Plus they tend to attack other fish more.

bowfin eat sunnies for breakfast. not to mention lunch and dinner. in fact, all the bigger fish (pike, walleye, muskie, etc) will tear up sunfish. they're the "middle" part of the food chain. they eat the smaller fish, and they get eaten by the big ones.
besides, if you're going to put bass in the tank, you've already got sunnies.
I'm not trying to push them one you, but you did say an ecosystem type tank and sunfish are nearly omnipresent in the U.S., it's hard for me to imagine that type of setup without them.

this is right up my alley.... im in the process of just this tank.... i have so far 2 bullhead, 3 gar, 3 gills, a pumpkinseed, and a small channel cat in a 240. the gills are total pricks.. only to themselves, pumpkinseed is the boss. they each have about a 1-2 square foot circle they call their own... once outside that they are on the defense... as long as its not overly crowded, and well fed, you should be able to have a nice pond enviroment.

if your looking for a list of natives, check out the local dnr website. ohio has a list of all species, invasive, endangered, and native. good reading. lots of info on fish from minnows to sturgeon.

i wouldn't put any really large predators in the tank personally like LMB,SMB, gars, nor muskie etc. I would rather have more community style fish like Pumpkinseeds and other nice looking sunfish with some shiners.

5 feet deep? 10x4x5=1,496 gallons. I put 2 white bass in my pond yesterday and they are crazy. They're always moving around, making my other fish move! There are endless native fish possibilities for your pond.

Any predators will endanger the others, having said that, I love pickerel. Small mouth bass can have some stunning colors and can go alright, but watch that mouth lol. I still like using white suckers as a bottom fish. White or Yellow Perch are a fun schooling fish. Creek chubs get to a pretty good size and will school. I dont really like chubs myself, but it sounds like a nice option for you. IMO they tend to be fat and greedy. Bullhead dont get huge and have some interesting behavior. Of course, American Eel are readily available at bait stores and have some fascinating personalities

FLANDERS NJ.... WOOORRDDD i live there! i also keep natives, mixed hordes of sunfish and schools of shiners is what i would suggest. Crayfish are also entertaining i have a huge one.
