My wife recently came across the idea of a natural swimming pool and thought it’d be a good way to combine my desire for a koi pond with her wish for a pool.

Anyone have experience with these? Do they work as advertised? Or do they get gunky when you start adding livestock?

They can work as advertised if you either make them very large with plant filtration and only a small amount of koi or you add decent filtration. If you use filtration make sure to only use low voltage pumps otherwise it can be pretty dangerous if you get a short circuit while somebody is swimming in the pool.

Caperguy99 Caperguy99 , how'd it go?

Thinking that in NS you might be able to develop an interesting ecosystem beyond koi to help with water-quality - look into sunfish, frogs & salamanders to beef-out the/your interest, and also native FW mussel/clam (check they're not endangered) & FW sponges for filtration, along with a formal filtration something as Milingu Milingu is suggesting so you're not too fish-limited. Longnose gar, even (check DFO/NSFW)

Try to exclude ducks (most waterfloul, heartbreakingly) as "Duck-itch" can be yucky. Keep towels at-hand, don't air-dry.
