Bigger the better with any wild life but you don't need a pond just to be able to keep a few fish.

Coldwater fish need more oxygen and big coldwater fish are naturally going to need more room, fish like Largemouth bass and Bowfin need at minimum (depending on the tank dimensions) a 250g....but a 400g would be the best size for a fish that can reach over 30inches long.
