Naughty Ray Thread!!!

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
So, I am working on getting the drip system more automated and subtle (if you can call nailing hoses to walls subtle), and a beautiful lady named Ashley waves me over to see this. :screwy:

[yt]<object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/zqwoBQWgHsU&hl=en&fs=1"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/zqwoBQWgHsU&hl=en&fs=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object>[/yt]

(A post with more complete details will be coming soon, but Ashley is asleep and she does all of the best photo editing, so it will have to wait until tomorrow.)

We've been planning on moving her within the next few days, but this just weirded us out. this was rather strange, but her stingray tankmates are all fine, ammonia/nitrite/nitrate are at 0, and she is generally an active, playful and feisty ray. :D They are eating fine, and besides her little upside-down stunt, nothing else is amiss. Anyone seen this before?

Thanks,
Matt

Wow! Have you tested for oxygen levels?

Even with a drip, how do you have zero nitrates?! Thats almost impossible. Are you testing correctly?

Last night was the first time we had ever seen her do this, but she did it about three times within 15 minutes for about 30 seconds each time. She is nuts.

Here are a few still shots of Mox playing Spiderman:

I tested nitrates this morning. It's at 5ppm.

Thats awesomly (is that a word?) low. My tap comes out at 15ppm so its rare for my tanks to be less then 40ppm!

Haha, thanks. Yeah, Matt is some kind of mad scientist that spends multiple hours a day trying to get the water as pristine as possible. Drip systems pretty much rock, and I'm sure the fluidized bed filter is helping a bit... it's connected to that tank right as we're trying to get it nice and ready for the two 523 gallon tanks that'll be coming in within the next few weeks. That FBF is rated at 900g. It's absolute insanity.

As far as oxygen levels, I personally feel like the tank might be over-oxygenated, ha. Could that be why she might be doing that? Out of all of our rays, Mox is the showiest. She's always pulling all kinds of crazy stunts (like half of her disc will come out of the water, and we can actually pet her and such... which I don't believe she's begging for food... she does with food in the tank or not, ha). The other rays act completely normal. And she's quite healthy. So, is there anything we should be worried about? Or is this just her personality to act like a complete crackhead?

Any feedback is much appreciated. :)

My Flower ray is very similar so I'm going with the crackhead version of the posibilities....Only thing that is different is that my Flower does it rightside up LOL

I like you beleive that his tank is prob considered Over oxygenated as well... maybe it makes them feel high or something

The first retics I had all started out in a 10 gal tank. One at a time for a few weeks to make sure they ate and were healthy. Tank filtered by a small Penguin filter.
