Necrocanis got a wels!

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Oh come now necrocranis. You have a phone camera dont you? :D

The crap 2mp cam on my phone is useless for in tank shots lol.

Haha yes I could probably get a 5 footer for the price you paid, but I'd need to get rid of my current fish if I wanted one :(
Plus the fact that you have access to Flatheads  :banghead:

Definately looking forward to what you have planned for this fish - I know you are dedicated enough to give it an appropriate home :)

you will see! :) one thing is certain at least in a smallish tank you don't want to house flathead and wels together lol.

Haha yep!
Ship me your flathead and I'll send you an Albino Wels ! ;)

I saw it on youtube, he has a youtube video of it :D :D

As for your questions:

Mine was with goldfish and it would eat its fill of food I fed it but then occasionally I would find a goldfish missing!

Mine jumped thats why I warned you about that, it was kept outdoors in the summer time and outside temps would fluctuate between 60s in the evenings to 100s in the afternoon and the wels was fine. The water temp stayed about 80ish and it was fine. There was an occasion were water temp went down to mid 60s and the wels was fine.....remember they are found in russia were its cold and freezing but also in spain were its a lot warmer and it did well.

I think it will be ok with tankmates as long as they are a little bigger but not too big because they could eat your wels until its a giant size :) They are very active at night, daytime not as much

On growth rate you quoted 2 feet in first year.. I know from a guy who breeds these that his albinos take 3 years to reach 20" when fed pellets only. The normal form takes about 6 months less to reach this size.
He is located in Austria though so the Wels do not grow year round as in the Winter they're metabolism slows down to almost zero.
Btw, being from the border of Russia and China.. It is likely that this guy comes from the amur, where AFAIK Glanis does not occur. ?!

These things were stocked in the manmade lakes on Victory Base Complex in Baghdad when I was deployed. We used to catch them all the time. Really powerful fish when they get huge. Really aggressive too.

Look again it is 2 ft in the first two years. This is from a scientific study on wild fish. :)

That's pretty sweet. I never got to go to victory when I was deployed over there. :( I heard about the fishing in those lakes too.

Oh yeah, it was never said that they were wild caught they are bred there. The breeder breeds S. glanis. He does both albino and regular.

It was pretty insane. The Slayer lakes had HUGE fish. Mangar that were 4 - 6 feet long. The biggest Wels I saw caught was about 100 pounds and that came out of Z Lake in between Liberty and Victory. We would hook smaller Asp fish behind the dorsal and let them free swim. It was exciting fishing for sure. I didn't have the tackle to handle the huge ones but I hooked a lot of fish that spooled me and landed a few in the 20 - 30 pound range.
