Need 8-10" cichlid ideas

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
What I would do:
Tanganyika community- Calvus, Julies, shell dwellers, etc..two species total

Dwarf SA- Apistogramma, Nannacara, Laeatacara or some of the medium sized acaras like Krobia..You could do a pair or harem depending on species

West African community- Pelvicachromis, Hemichromis, Pseudocrenilabrus, buffalo heads

Centrals- Pair of Archocentrus or the majority of the Cryptoheros.

Glad a public aquarium had some large jags. Honestly the public aquariums I've been to usually sort some terrible looking cichlids and FW. Most dedicated hobbyist do better. lol

Very nice and I do love the Cubans look, certainly something to consider. Thank you for the lovely photos as well; are they your fish?

I have also came across an A.Lyonsi which I have read males get 9" females 7ish. Now I know my tank will not sustain a male for life...however a female would probably be okay long term. I could always do an upgrade if I wound up with a male to something larger. I don't really view any tank as "permanent" in my fish room as I am constantly finding new ways to upgrade or shove another tank in there.

My male lyonsi hit 10 inch and was really bulky, female about 8 inch, if you can upgrade really nice fish

Thanks for the feedback and I can upgrade if/when necessary. How quick was the growth rate?

I had a Lyonsi in a 125, and he very quickly got too big for the tank. He was over 10 inches, he was rambunctious, and he grew very quick. Even quicker than Zonatus and Synspilum I have grown out.

If I got another one, I'd look to put him in a bigger tank than my 125. And if you ordered one, there'd be no guarantee what sex you'd get.

Everybody has their own opinions on tank size. I think the "rules" are all pretty much bs when it comes to cichlids, but i am a bit less conservative than many of the people you will find here. Not saying their wrong, just that everyone has opinions. I think it's pretty reasonable to say that a 40 breeder can happily house a 6-7" fish for life. If i were you id go one of these-
Sajica
Salvini
HRP/Convict
Firemouth/ellioti
Centrarchus
A. Heckelli
Panamensis
Nanolutes
Get a few small juvies, grow them untill you can tell youve got a nice male, and sell the rest. Maybe throw a few large tetras in there for him to chase. Just my 0.2
