I got 50 feet of 1.5 inch sump pump hose and just suck on the end of the hose to start the syphon. The other member is right though. It'd be too much if you had sand. I attempted gravel vacuuming with it and it sucks out gravel and everything. I have pea gravel in my aquarium. You might try 1" hose and see if that would be strong enough, but not too much that it sucks out your sand. The 1.5" hose seems to drain most of my 180 in about 10 minutes.
You could also just suck on the python as hard as you can and run it outside or throw the end in the bathtub. I think you get a stronger syphon. You aren't wasting more water from the sink running.
