Need a filter idea for a 3x3 area?

I have used barrels, in tandem with fluidized beds, and even suspended protein skimmers above the barrel.
As said above, it doesn't matter where the tank is, although this is not what you need it provides options that worked for me, in a small space.
Although I've placed my fluidized bed next to the barrel, it could have just as easily been placed inside to save space, and I've placed trickle towers in sumps as well.

above a trickle bio tower placed in a sump,
below a 4ft tall x 8" diameter fluidized bed next to a barrel sump

the same barrel sump containing filter socks, pump, heaters etc

When water changes were done, all water entered the sump first, instead of the tank, with a permanent line, with standpipe for measuring temp. In winter water from pips often came in, in the high 30sF so needed to be constantly checked, in case the water heater emptied.

I'v got plenty of time to figure it out, I think even a small custom fit tank for the bottom to act as the sump, and than a barrel design above it would likely be my best option.
