Need a Fish or Invert that will move the sand/burrow/stir in it

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
........Yes, I like the Heckelii would a single one be okay by itself?

I do plan on doing it as well during WC... I just wanted to spice it up with something that would play with the sand since I just went sand from gravel (Gravel for 10 years straight big gravel too) they dont have to throw the sand like a salad just interact with it more than a regular fish if that makes sense..

.........
heckelii males may fight, I don't know if that's lessened in large tanks. M/F are ok until spawn time then male often kills female. pairs need big tank.

It doesn't necessarily sift, but my girfriend has a 6 inch horsefaced loach that Dives into the substrate and looks like it swims thru it w/ her apistos. I also have a Peruvian flounder that buries itself and moves sand, its definitely odd imo.

I think it was MTS (Malaysian Trumpet Snails) that also sift sand... plus, they have super hard shells so not likely to get eaten?

Malayan live bearing snails spend most daylight hours digging thru the sand eating uneaten fish food and rotting plant parts, and as they burrow, they keep sand from getting anaerobic. Their shells are too tough for most cichlids except Paretroplus. The only time you see them is in the morning before the lights go on, because they climb out on the glass at night, as soon as lights come on they fall back into the substrate.

See this was more what I'm looking for... Something more unique!! So Oscar won't eat these things? These sound perfect if they won't get eaten.

As Fat Homer said, they are also called Trumpet snails, they can reach a size of almost 2", but it takes a while to get there. Some people think of them as pests because they breed like rabbits, but to me they are fabulous because they constantly move the substrate. I keep them in all my tanks, except the Paretroplus tank, where they get eaten.

In my smaller tanks i use japanese trapdoor snails, and they work great, but i dont know how theyd do in bigger tanks, im still converting from gravel. Lol
