well now a couple of hours pass, i fed both the gar and aro. Both still very active and eating. BUT now the aro has a bloated stomach. i know its not due to over feeding becuz his stomach has not ever been this bloated.
that is a characin...the first pic i showed you is it...look at the head and mouth...the middle pic is of a longnose gar...true gar...the last pic is of a florida gar another true gar...the first pic witch yours is, is a characin...the same family as the 'silver gar'...i will post the pics side by side for you...
oo sorry, but thank you for the correction. and i actually just talked to a friend on the phone that knows a lot about gars and gave me a pretty good history on them. i guess theres only true like 7 species of gars and theres a lot of fish that look like them so a lot of lfs call them gars.
this is your fish^
this is a hajuta gar/silver gar/rocket gar witch is a characin below
here is another of the characin i showed you before labeled as South American gar

look at all their faces and body structure...your fish is a characin and not a gar...i don't know the scentific name, but i can try and find it for you...as this is your fish...
having established what your "gar" is i can now tell you that they are taritorial to the top section of water and they will fight with aros and other characins in the same tank region...
Nice chat we just had on the phone. A lot of the people posting in this thread know their Arowana stuff so you'll be sure to get good advice.
Keep up steady water changes over the next week - I think your water parameters will go back down to normal and this is just a mini-cycle from the arowana addition a few days ago. Try to get a picture of the stomach bloat in the morning if it hasn't gone down and post them here.
That characin should be fine with the Arowana for a while but the Aro will quickly outgrow it and there may be future problems. Heather and I have one just like yours that had to be moved due to a true gar and an arowana being too aggressive for it.
