no it is not a true gar, true gars are way different fish...look at that sticky in the gar section it goes into detail on the differences

they both are the common names used...it is a characin and you can call it by eaither name, but if you call it a gar and post in the gar section about it you will be informed that it is not a gar and that you should post in the 'other characins' section of the 'other monster fish' forum...they just wont be as nice about it...i have had a 'hajuta gar' before and it jumped into the top witch broke its back, killing it...

They are different from your characin in a handful of ways - true gars have two nostrils off their snout and a rounded tail instead of a forked one amongst other things.

Nice, i guess this is y i joined. Its good to know the truth. i guess the lfs isnt as knowledgeable as i thought. And hey mike sorry for callin ya matt, i have no idea y i did. U'll get used to me not being good with names.

They're still pretty cool (I keep both), they just don't have that prehistoric awesomeness of the true ones. Once your bigger tank is ready you could find a Florida gar for very cheap online.
