Aquaclear 110 all the way. Great, dependable, wont leak all over your floor, a quarter the price of an fx5, oh and did I mention dependable. I have one running for over 10 years now with original parts. A friend of mine has one I sood him that is now almost 15 years old. They never die and work great.

Sent from my DROID BIONIC using MonsterAquariaNetwork App

My ac110 was garbage. The pump blew on me after 24 hours brand new. The high flow rate caused so much water disturbance I couldn't see inside the tank as duckweed was EVERYWHERE. All over the water collumn. My fish couldn't breath without spitting out duckweed. The filter sucked up a mouthfull of duckweed. with the intake sponge on the intake sponged turned green and doubled in size. Their was a huge mess of gunk in the filter, almost killed everything in the tank. ammonia reached 5 ppm for several hours from all the duckweed pulp in the filter. I cleaned it out immediately and threw the filter in the garbage (no returns accepted :( ) ammonia went away.

Sounds like operator error to me. AquaClears are the best hang on back filters ever made. I have some that have been running 24/7 for over 30 years.Quiet and dependable. As far as canisters go, you can't go wrong with eheim or fluval. Rena XPs are also decent.

1 thing I am sure of..... ac110 NOT garbage.....may be used for wrong application ...but.....they are like a 500 gallon an hour can for 80 bucks ...:)

Unless your not concerned about having water on your floor I would skip the Odyssea cfs 500. I had one on a 55 gallon tank and it leaked so I tightened the lid a little more until it stopped leaking, that night the whole lid failed and pumped half my tank onto the floor. After reviewing the photos the forums consensus was that I had over tightened the lid. It's a damned if you do, damned if you don't filter. The plastic that the lid is made out of is SUPER cheap, it was flaking in my hand while I was examining the broken pieces.

If you do go with the CFS500, a few tips. (1) Use the shut off valve on the intake to restrict the flow to a little less than the pump can return, this will help relieve the pressure on the lid. (2) Go down to the hardware store and get some washers and foam pad to place on the lid nuts to help disperse the pressure. It's what I did on the replacement lid that I was sent, unfortunately the second lid was not a good fit and and no matter how I tightened it it leaked, so I couldn't use it. Ended up picking up a pair of AC110s for $30 ( I know 1 is over kill on a 55, but damn if I was gonna pass up $15 AC110s)

I know that it hurts to spend a ton of money on good filters, but $200 spent now might save you thousands in floor repair later. Especially when your talking about canister filters that are pumping water out of your tank. Of course if it's in a garage or an unfinished basement where it's just gonna make a mess on a cement pad, go for it and report back.
