Here's some more pics for hopefully a better view...I don't know what I'm going to do with this guy he was handed to me at the pet store and the guy couldn't tell me where he got him...but hes injured and I would have taken him to the pond down the road but I'm not so sure he will survive...he spends a lot of time in the water rather than basking under the light so that makes me think he's not a box turtle but I could be wrong...I hope he is though because I actually find them easier to maintain then aquatic turtles...thank god I have taken care of turtles and tortoises before...but UUHHH first it was two kittens now this guy...what's next???? Thanks for the help everyone.

I am positive it is a Diamondback Terrapin. That is a very cool turtle that you have come across- please take good care of it.

Thank you guys, and its awesome that I got him because they are non native to long island from what I have heard...I deffinately agree on a DBT I googled some pics and that's him alright...I just went to the pet store today and spent quite a bit on stuff for Donnatello ( that's what I call him after the ninja turtles) I didn't know if he would like crickets so I got a few of them and some pellets and some freeze dried baby krill...he LOVES the krill!!! He's in a ten gallon now with half land half water and a basking lamp...until he grows alittle more...I got some medication for his cut and its already getting better so I think he's gonna be fine...although its another animal to spend all my money, I'm enjoying taking care of him.

They're native up to cape cod, so while it's not extremely likely he was found on long island, he could have been found on the other shore in brackish water. This turtle is going to need upwards of 75 gallons of water, so think on that before committing to taking on this turtle.
