Need Advice: Electrical bill increasing due to heating tanks during winter

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
put it this way dump the glass heaters and get a titanium heater i just switched all of mine and they work absolutely great compared to the glass i dropped my electric bill by 60 bucks a month just switching the 400 gallon pond from 2 300 watters down to 1 250 w titanium and i keep it right at 81-83 degrees and the heater light is barely ever on when i walk in there the other 2 were alwys on so just my 2 cents

i'd do both just to keep it that much lower.... you should use an aquarium heater calculator so you make sure you get a right size. a 250w constantly running during an hour? or a 400w that runs for about a half hour on and off? it's up to you.

BTU's are BTU's and energy is energy. To raise the temperature as it is currently set up there needs to be insulation. Adding wattage to increase the temperature will only increase energy consumption and raise the power bill.

:screwy: It's not about BTU. It's about energy consumption. Having a heater run 24/7 and could not raise your tank temp to desire level, not only a waste of energy, soon, your heater will be wasted, too! :grinno:

So....... add another heater (my electrical bill was $250 with the two heaters I mentioned, now averging $150 with one), or just plain insulate? I got a .25" acrylic cover on my glass tank. Aren't other members experiencing high energy bills?

Thanks to all for the advice, please keep it coming.

JJ

Another heater can't and won't get your electric bill up another 100 bux! :grinno:

Yup simple concept sometimes missed :nilly: I work in HVAC and people surprise me on this forum and aquaria central every day.

This is interesting... Im intrigued I will look in to this.

well carswell what would you do???

my buddy is way into HVAC. ended up being an assitant teacher at his votech school. all he does is stuff all the mumbo jumbo ambient air crap in my ear. it's actually really annoying.

888 i go for looks so i aint going to insulate my tanks but seeing your's are in the garage i am sure you're not going for looks. but i am certain your 250w heater is going to be constantly on in a 140g trying to compinsate for 20-25 degree temperature difference between air and water.

don't be so cheep, by having 2 heaters you take all the load off the one that can't even heat that much water in the first place........you'll prob end up burin up the one you have runnin it all day like that. just get two 250w
