I have had two fresh water stingrays for about 2 years. I have never had a problem with them eating. The female is acting strange-- not eating (a day now-) the acting strange is difficult to describe. What ever this is it is the beginging stages(noticed changes today and last night). There is no curling in the front.(curl of death)
I have replaced the filters and did a water change about a week ago.
My salt level is right at .30 and has been close to that for at least above .20 for some time.
My ammoina test does not show any amonia my PH is above 6.0. I can't find my nitrate tester but don't believe it is high. I will take my water to be tested tomorrow at my pet store.
Her pelvic bones might be starting to show...don't know.

Does anyone have any ideas what may be going on? Similar experiences?
I was hoping one day they might mate but I am now worried about her health.

I have attached a picture. The ray next to the rock is the female. The male bullies her and the light colors on her skin are of them fighting. This has been going on for at least a year.

I will try to buy black worms tomorrow.( I want to get her eating) I usually feed them a small hand full once a month but their main diet is night crawlers. (from my pet store--same supplier always) The male is healthy on the same diet.

Thanks for any advice and help you can provide.

Just ignoring how cramped that ray looks in that tank... I am going to address your problem.

If pelvic bones are showing in a ray that you have had for 2 years, then you are under-feeding her. This may be due to you just not feeding enough or the dominance of the male ray over her, keeping her from eating. You should set up a tank just for her and keep her solo for some time, until she puts on good weight, maybe 2-3 months would be good, all things considered. Bottom line is, if the male is bullying her she will not eat properly... so she needs to be solo. For her, stick with what she eats for now, but for the male whom eats well, start mixing his diet up with shrimp, krill, prawn, silver sides, smelt, tilapia, clam, squid, super worms....

Good luck, and get all those rocks out of that tank! Slowly, only a few a weak, so as not to remove too much bacteria at once. Your female will pull through fine if she is in iso and can relax and eat on her own without being harassed.

There is no reason to medicate just yet.

not sure what is her deal. try treating her with some metro, and do you ever have problems with there poop going behind the rocks and having ammonia spikes, just wondering because I had that happen to me. I took all the rocks out of my tank. Also maybe the male just wants to get some!!!!!! and thats why she is being harassed. Try putting in a tank divider to separate them and that should help her from stressing her out when the male picks on her.

thanks for the advice... on your salt meter what is your salt level? The pet store that sold them to me said they use the .30 to kill parasites.

I agree!!!!! 100% you put it in better words then me. I'm tired.

I have a dragon fish and he keeps the sand turned over and eats all the poop. He is about 13 inchs long and about 1.5 inches around the neck.

What kind of salt are you using????? I would never out salt water salt in your tank, just Whats it called NC?? or something, just aquarium salt I put 1 table spoon for every 10 gallons. Just when one of my rays are stressed out.
