Need Advice on Breeding Cichlids

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I just got some pollits that are close to being adult sized so I should have some polit fry in a few months. This cichlid breeder that I bought them off of showed me his technique and system in how he removes the fry and raises them. He said no egg tumber was necessary as long as I don't strip the female to early:)

so now that I have the potential breeders that I want...its all just a waiting game from here...waiting for them to become adults. I might be pickin up a 125 this weekend to add to the basement fishroom, i think it would make a good grow out tank for my colony of tropheus dubosoi

those pheno tanzanians you got will breed at 3". feed them mysis and colour bits. i have almost 40 freggs (they eyes and tails are out of the eggs)

i have had those fish for 2 weeks.

They are awesome, and prohibitively costly for F1 or WC. just make sure the parents look good, and if you find f1 or wc, get one, but be prepared to pay huge.

Good luck:nilly:

Please try CichlidLovers.com they generally have alot of exotic and rare cics that you may or maynot have seen. I hope you have the best of luck and 1 day I may do what you are doing but strictly for the love and hobby of it not for business.

wow I had no idea the pheno tanzanians could breed at that small of a size. I will pick up some mysis and color bits this weekend! all of the fish I have are F2 so not as rare as the WC or F1 but I can't afford them when they are too expensive.
I always say what I am doing is first and foremost a hobby because I absolutely love taking care of my fish and watching them grow, and secondly a business because I will be making some money from selling the fry. I think it would be difficult to keep cichlid breeding to a hobby because I would eventually have to sell the fry sooner or later, unless I bought loads of tanks:)

its really as big a deal as people think to have WC or F1. They key is to get the fish from different sources, and take a look at what the parents look like if you can. eventually you will likely stumble on a wc or f1, and you should buy it to mix up your bloodlines. I just bought 21 pheno tanzanians from a pet shop about an hour from me. They are 1"-1 1/2", and look awesome so far. the generation doesnt really matter, because they are from somewhere I didnt get my other group. eventually, i am going to do a species tank of these for breeding, and will likely have 2 or 3 males, and 10 or 15 females. I got all these for 6 bucks each incl tax. I also just got an F1 group of cyrtocara moori for 100 dollars - 2m 5 f. One of the males is about 6"+, and the females are 3-4". The guy needed the tank space. Thats the key for you. look around for the fish you want, and have the space to put them in if you can find a smokin deal. In this economy, there are a lot of really great deals.:headbang2

I am definitely all about gettin good deals. Me and my buddy just picked up a 125gal complete setup up for $125, custom stand and canopy + canister filters, bio-wheels, air pumps, gravel, filter media, lights, and tons more. Yeah people love gettin those WC or F1 but I try to stay away from pet shops if I am looking to find some high quality breeders. These fish I picked up all had some great looking parents w/ a great caretaker who has been in the hobby for over 30years. I think my tropheus dubosoi, pheno tanzanians, and polits will be some good breeding colonies now that each species will have large growout tanks (125, 110, 72gal respectively).

Sounds like you are all set. now all you need is some 5 gallons, 10 gallons, 20 gallons, 40 gallons..... lol. It never ends. I think Im converting my workshop in the basement into a fishroom. Its nuts.

Good luck to you:headbang2

yeah I just sold a lot of non-cichlid fw fish out of my smaller tanks then shut them down until my colonies start producing fry. I have a 20, two 10s and a 5 ready to take on the first batches of fry but I will probably run out of room sooner than later:D

I noticed that I had a female Polit holding a few days ago so she is now in my 20gallon quarantine tank and I am anxiously awaiting some fry in roughly 20 days or less:)
