So I'm setting up a 90 gallon tank with various "med/large" fish; a severum, EBJD, maybe a big pleco, or a redtail "shark", possibly a pair of needlenose "gars," etc. I'm not too sure yet what exactly I want to put in there but it will be stocked similar to that. The green severum will be in there for sure.

So anyways, I'm not sure what I want to do for filtration. I'm leaning towards Rena or Fluval(or another Hagen filter?), as that is what I have easy access to. Should I go for just an xp4 and nothing else, or a 405 and nothing else, or a combination of two filters, or...? I can't make up my mind what I like/want/whats best... Keep in mind I haven't bought any filters yet, but I do have a Fluval 405 on my 55 saltwater and a 205 on a 10 gal quarantine tank. I've heard good things about Rena though.

Also, opinions on under gravel filters?

Thanks

i do not like under gravel filters at all. i like fluval filters, they haven't done me wrong and i have also heard nothing but awesome rena. it really depends on how heavy you want your filtration to be. im sorry i havent been to much of a help.

FX5 FTW! Hard to beat the bang for the buck.

I've heard good things, but I'm not convinced. I kinda want to wait until they have been around a while.

What is your reason for not liking under gravel filters? Just curious.

I'd like good, heavy filtration but I also don't want to go broke on a 90 gallon, lol.

fx5 if you got the $
but i wouldn't go with rena xp4. xp3 is almost the same as xp4 nd it'll save you some $.
i got a xp3 nd love it.

Thanks for the info, I'll probably go with a rena...I'm going to do some more research on the fx5 before I make up my mind though.

I took a look at a Fx5 in operation the other day. I was surprised at it's large size. Next to it was a row of Cascade canister filters that I knew nothing about??? The fish store owner has gone mostly with the Cascade filters!

I have two Rena xP3's one is new and the other has been running for almost two years. I would not call them top of the line but for the money I have been very happy with them. One thing I don't like is the priming system, I think it could be a lot better. With the addition of some fine mesh bags you can load them with a reasonable amount of Carbon. I don't thing the bio media it comes with is enough and add as much more as I can fit. I use the carbon pack it comes with for the first set up and use the mesh bags and bulk carbon after that.

On larger tanks, if I have the money, I like to customize a set of Ocean Clear canisters and an appropriate pump and inline heater. In my opinion that is the best canister set up you can have. But bring money.
