Need Advice Please...(aggressive or community)

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Thanks guys I decided on community... here is the list. (5 bleeding heart tetras, 4 red minor tetras, 4 glowlight tetras, and 2 bloodfin tetras) is that too much for the 50 gallon...PS I plan on getting at least 4 angels

No, too loose. Your tank could house 10 each of those tetras. Add a pair of bristlenose plecos or a large group of corydoras.

I was told by an aquarium store that you should measure the length of all of your fish. The measurement should be 1 gallon per 1 inch of fish. We are attempting to use this guideline. I have a Gold Bristle nose pleco. I read online that they are a little aggressive. And, that they tend to bully other pleco's. They will eat out their eyes. Mine is about 3 inches, and it tries to claim an area already occupied by a common pleco that is just over twice it's length. I was in an aquarium store and seen a new batch of bristle nose pleco's. One was dead and two other bristles were sucking on each side of it's head. Clearly going for it's eyes first. The Bristle nose is supposed to be a good pleco for a Cichlid tank as the Bristles protect help to protect it. My Bristle is with 2 Neon Jewel Cichlids, and an Electric Blue Jack Dempsey Cichlid. I do have an Albino Dinosaur in the same tank. But, it will have to be moved as it grows. My Convict had to be moved as it bullied all fish i put it in with. We put the Con in with 2 fully grown Oscars. Finally he stopped his bullying. Since the Oscars could potentially eat the Con, the Con found a way to make itself useful to the Oscars. When goldfish were placed into the tank some would hide behind our in tank filter. The young Con would swim up and chase the goldfish out of hiding so the Oscars could eat them. The Oscars never bothered the Con. This behaviour was shocking to me! When the Oscar's went into mating mode (scouping out sand to make a flat spot to lay the eggs) the young Con would mimic them and dig it's own little flat spot! :)

It's only a general guideline but it debunks considerations for bioload, adult size of fish, dwelling level, etc. I don't like that "guideline" and never use it. We have a sticky thread here by guppy that explains why it should not be used. Can't fit 10 inch oscar in a 10g for instance.

Which bristlenose species is it? Male bristlenose plecos are indeed territorial but there is no reason why they cannot be kept in a community tank. In a 50g owned by the OP, I doubt the BN plecos will have a problem coexisting with other fish he stated. I've kept bristlenose plecos in my community and goldfish tanks with no issues. In fact, bristlenose plecos are one of the very few plecos that are very compatible with slow fancy plecos.

The eyes are the juiciest part when a fish dies so naturally, the eyes are the first to be eaten. Plecos in general are opportunistic scavengers so just because the plecos start sucking on corpses, it does not mean they cannot be kept with other fish. It does not count as aggression towards other fish and not enough reason to not keep them with other fish.

And no, the bristles are not used to protect themselves. They can handle themselves in some cases because they are left alone by most cichlids however they are no different and no worse than other plecos.

If there is a reason the pleco sucks its tankmate's slime coat, it is because it is deprived of the nutrition it needs and is resorting to slime coat which serves as their protein source. In this case, address its nutrition because that has always been the primary issue with plecos with habitual sucking of slime coat. A lot of people forget plecos need a varied diet as much as other fish do, not for janitorial services.

1 Jack Dempsey 2 firemouths 1 Hartwegi and 2 convicts is NOT OVERCROWDED because your tank is 18 inch wide and with 2 large hanging filters. If you want to put more fish your going to need a wet/dry filter.
