I have 2 zebra spiny eels with mine . Just a heads up convicts can get really mean if they are breeding.:)

i know they get huge but what do you guys think of a jaguar cichlid if i let the bichirs get to like 5-6" and buy it close to when im getting my 100 up and running? i really like those and as long as the cichlid doesn't grow significantly faster than the bichirs how do u think they'd react to each other? also i'll look in to that african featherfin :P

maybe

CA/SA aren't good tank mates, Tin foils get too large for a "45"gal. African Featherfin get well over 6" more like 8"-10"...Pictus are poor tankmates IMO. Polys in good health will have a growing rate of 1"-3" a month for about three-four months. Please read over the Polypterus Stickies they're very helpfull.

after looking in to it a little more i see that a lot... well i guess now i can make the choice between some senegals or i can get a single jag cichlid, lot to consider over the next week or so before i set up and stock the tank

Jaguar Cichlid or Bichirs... leaning toward Cichlid more than ever even though i came in to this post wanting to know more about the bichirs haha

There's a (probably) 10" jag at my LFS...beautiful fish. I wish I had a tank to keep him in, I'd take him home in a heartbeat.

I do love my bichirs though, they're making it more of a pain than it should be to stock my 65, but I think its worth it...they're such cool fish!

i may end up having to flip a coin on this one haha... my only thought is that the jags are more active than the bichirs when you feed them from what a friend told me.. i'll probably make another topic asking specifics for both species and try and make a judgement off of what i'm told

Yeah...sometimes my bichirs are somewhat active at feeding...but not really. Granted they're still very young, so its all pellets and I'm trying to get them onto krill. I think once they're old enough for good live feedings it'll be a little more interesting.

Personally I'm just a fan of the ancient-ness of the bichir, the serpent like body etc etc. I saw them once at an LFS and decided I had to have some, and its been going from there with learning about them and whatnot.

I think today I might try and pick up a green terror, still not sure what else I'm going to put in there though. I'm still kind of interested in the pictus cats, but I am worried now that they won't mesh will with the bichirs considering the small floor space. Maybe a striped raphael cat and one other cichlid. I dunno.

hope the dempsey and terror get along well enough for you, I made another post trying to gather as much info as I can about the bichirs and jags lol, it's great that i can get so many different opinions on here. I like the bichirs but the jag would almost be like having a bass again, when i was a kid we had a largemouth for probably 2-3 years, caught when about an inch and a half long with a net we had to catch and feed him tiny minnows we caught with a home made net made out of a screen door a metal ring and a broom handle, unfortunately he and the catfish we had in the tank with him both succumbed to ick. We cured it the first time, but the 2nd go around got em :(
