 happened--
I was driving around early this morning when I found an interesting little pet shop. After a few minutes I realised that it was not a very good shop (dirty tanks, bad combos, half dead fish, dead fish.)
I saw a big ugly fish that looked really stressed out, it was some kind of large frontosa in a (about nine inches) small 30 gallon, cowering in the corner freaked out. His tank mates were modestly priced South American cichlids who were actually smaller than him but clearly more aggressive.

I don't know, at that moment I told myself, poor thing... he's a goner. Upon further examination I noticed he did not have any visible white spot, cloudy eye, serious injuries, or parasites, just a few shredded fins and half a tail missing. (I know "just" is a bad way to describe it, however considering the conditions the poor thing was living in this is nothing) I thought he would survive if I could raise him back to health in my hospital tank.

He's been swimming around my h tank looking much better. He ate a few flakes of fish food.

---Now I have never kept this fish, I need some help

He is sending me mixed signals at this point; I don’t understand its behaviour patterns.
He/she stays most of the time in the bottom of the tank (bad sign) however he/she is fighting his reflection, acting territorial (good sign)
Now I added salt and aqua + to help with his cut up fins.
He tank mates are currently a large wimpy peacock cichlid, who he completely ignores and a butterfly loach who keeps the hospital tank clean.
One interesting thing about this fish is that he is used to living on his own, and doesn’t mind my crazy peacock fish. (peacock is about ready to leave the hosital tank, he was placed in because he jumped out of the tank and hurt himself)
Will he survive?
This hospital tank is much too small for him, after he recovers I am moving him into my hap tank.

I have never kept a frontosa, these would be his tank mates, do you think this is possible? :
1 large frontosa with a bunch of haps in a 120 gallon long tank
Ph 8.5 with very hard water
One thing to note is that the haps are old and somewhat docile
Another thing to note is that the peacocks are very fast moving and hyper, this might disturb him.

its just good that you havent got a tank full of mbuna! they would kill him. i think haps... a good 70-80% chances of success my freind :)

I have mine with peacocks right now and they are fine...

Oh really... that's great then... and might I add... ...

thanks for the advise, either way I'm stuck with him until I can find a new home.

There is one big yellow lab, but he's pretty calm
