Need Geophagus stocking info please

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
What about a group of steinys? I have thought about this, and have heard they are quite entertaining.

I have a jurapari in with my red caps and they don't interact as much as the red caps do amongst themself. I have 3 red caps and 2 spawned and spend more time together than the second female who hangs out with my female nic.

Here is that article Japes is refering to: http://www.practicalfishkeeping.co.uk/content.php?sid=2558

Have you considered gymnogeos for your 75g setup? They are smaller than most geos and are pretty easy to care for, you don't even need a heater!

abarilot,
Thanks for the link to the article! I will read it in a second! I have not considered gymnogeos, I honestly don't know anything about them. I have always been a discus and ray guy and am sadly not as informed as a should be on the mass variety of fish out there. I would love any tips you could give me on them!!

Japes,
Good to hear the economy isn't as bad as I heard. If I did do a Jurupari school how could I make sure I didn't get too many males? Who would be a good source to find a very healthy and well colored juvis? Jeff Rapps? I have not ordered from him before.

Everyone else,
I really appreciate the input, I am very anal on giving my fish exacting healthy conditions so please keep the information coming!!!

I have a group of 6 ''rio pindare'' all about 3''-3.5'' + 1 Rotkeil sev in a 90 g,same footprint as your 75 g,two have paired off.I would'nt agree with them not being the most colorful, mine are showing beautiful reds and greens and they're certainly not timid, they swim all over the tank, never hide.Give 'em a try;)

G. sp. "Pindare" (or Parnaiba) are gorgeous fish. Not colourful by many peoples standards, but the colour they do have is subtly beautiful. Flash and non-flash will yield vastly different results. Here's a friends photos of one of his males (I believe) without flash.

Those are actually pretty nice, thanks for the pics Japes. I probably should have just googled and not been so lazy :)

How much do the pinare generally run? I have not seen them on any recent stocklists...

Any pics of any of the other small ones? I just took a pic of my "Jurupari" and will upload and try and post them here in a minute for a real ID. I would like to make sure it is what I think it is :)

How do I upload a dam picture? I can only find a place that wants a URL or email link??? Lame...it says at the bottom you can't post attachments? Then how are people uploading home pics? Goofy.

I just set up the the camera and took pics dang it.

UPDATE: I created a personal gallery, it is in there if anyone cares to try IDing the little sucker. Thanks!

I'd certainly agree that all Geophagus species are beautiful, and that "colorful" is a relative term. I have G. dicrozoster and G. winemilleri growing out in the same tank. One can perhaps argue that G. dicrozoster are not as colorful as G. winemilleri, but they are attractive in their own ways.
