I think i might actually be able to give some thoughtful advice for once!!!!
Latley i have been using small batch stink bait on one of these lures
I also added a spong on the treble hook on the ends of these lures kind of like this rig
I set it at the bottom and let the stink bait drift a little. I think this rig keeps enough of the bait on the lure to really attract them.
Also a chicken liver on a simple treble hook never fails. I always look for the deepest spots and wait.
O yeah and to answer your question, Geno's stink bait is what i usually use. Im not sure if it is local to the IL area, i cant find it here in IA anywhere.
This should be posted in the fishing forum, but I've always had luck with catfish... usually anything will work as long as it's sitting on the bottom they don't really care...
but I have never met a catfish that didn't like Shrimp or some other cut up fish that we would catch during the day... Sheephead were always super annoying so we used those as bait alot LOL
True, i was always taught the smelliest thing you can find will work best. Although wrapping line around the chicken liver has produced mixed results for me. Often times it is harder to set the hook with the wrapping technique ive found, or maybe its just bad luck. ive also found live crawdads hooked through the base of the tail works if you are at a place were you can catch them, i never buy them live. too expensive.
i use these bad boys to hook them, never fails to set.
Althought i live in buffalo no where near you I have have to agree with the people saying chicken liver. Liver is hard to make stay on the hook so i also hook a gizzard and a heart after. Let them run with it for a little bit before you set the hook. Good luck
I found some pics on google image of the gizzard shad. The one's i catch in my cast net range from 3-4 inches up to 5 pounders lol, overall great bait. I catch them at the saylorville resevior spillway here in iowa.
