Yea...I did jump the gun. I've always wanted to raise rays ever since I started this hobby 10 yrs ago but was scared of running into problems like this. I got out of the hobby for a yr and a half and just getting back in this year and decided to focus on rays. I read as much as I can and thought I new what I was doing. I new this was gonna happen cuz I am that kind of guy that everything I want to do I end up running to problems with just how I figured I would of with this project. Thx everyone for their help.

good luck bro seriously good luck if u have a friend near by with some seeded bio see if either A they will give you some and also see if they are willing to hold the ray in their establised tank till yours gets there asap

Take it slow bro moving way to fast the tank is not even cycled yet. GL hope it all works out for you

Wait, did you add the cycled filter to the tank the day before adding the the ray, or did you remove it from the tank the day before you added the ray.

If you added the filter the day before adding the ray, and it is still running on this tank, then it may just be a mini-cycle from differing bioloads. If you removed it the day before adding the ray, then there are no bacteria filtering the water, hence the nitrite readings.

Do you have another tank you could transfer the ray in to?

He took it out the day before he got the rays. There wasnt enough time for the canister with the BB to actually seed the current filter, thus he basically has no BB in his current filter and has just sent his tank in a new cycle...Why did you not just cycle it properly...If you can wait the 10 years, im pretty damn sure an extra couple weeks is nothing...

The white part that u see hanging, seems to have all just fallen off on both sides and it looks as if nothing happend. It looks just like it was shedding skin identicaly on both sides. After all the post I still did not get any response of what it was and if it was caused by not fully letting the tank cycle. It was just weird why just those two areas were affected and nowhere else on its disk was. And why it happend when I took out half the sand. Kolossus was the only one that helped me and I thanked him for that. I started the thread just to see if anyone has seen this before, not to get negative responses.

peeps BACK OFF CRITTER. he one cool cat...yall need to chill out..how you gonna bash the guy when he's asking for help...geez...ether say something good or dont say it at all...

1q) how could it be bad water?

1a) if it was i would think the ray would have died already. i'm sure we all know what happens to a fish or what they will look like when water has not ben cycled or bad water quality...obviously "WE" all have not seen this before so it can not be the "UN-CYCLED" water...i rule that out...

2q) could it be bacterial/virus?

2a) could be as this would be somethine a virus or bacterial could do this much damage to a fish and not water quality. i would say still treat the ray with what the experts say. prozi-pro or binox as a prevention. turn the heat up and add salt as heat and salt can only help not harm. but 'm still leaning towards no on bacteria. WHY? cauze my Hen and Marb you saw that day are fine. but keep in mind that the marb was wild and newly added to the tank but was QT for a week wth prozi-pro. and when your moto was in my tank she was fine and showed no signs of illness.

3q) could it be substrate?

3a) I WOULD SAY YES!!! y? because when i first got her and her mate i sort of had this same problem just not severe. at first i had a lot of PFS which had silica in it and it was as deep as you first had your sand. alomst an inch deep. 2nd day i had her she satrted to act weird. as in she was on the edges of her disc and constantly on the walls. then she had gotten a little red on the bottom but i thought she was still aclimating as her colors were not all there. so i took out 85% of the sand and you saw how much i had in there. since then she was fine. same thing happened to my hen. and i did the same thing with minimal sand...

I'M NOT SAYING IT IS ALL SUBSTRATE, but that could play a major role in it. then stress from moving, and of course the sand has not been throughly washed (haze in your tank?).

if you added the media to the tank, i hope you added at least half the water from the old tank to cut it in half. in doing so your are "mocking" a water change. i cycle my tanks same day and fish are in it within the minute. sometimes fish are in there while i set it up. never have any problems...

IMO...and my $5 not 2 cents...lol

i guess what i'm saying is this, med prevent her if not then turn heat up and salt. MOS DEF remove some of the sand. at least half so she has a chance to get to a bare bottom part of the tank. kinda like giving them a break from the sand. never know, she can be allergic to sand..lol

GL and keep me and us posted!
