I'm not smart with fish and didn't do my proper research. Today I setup up my 55 gallon tank, with water and water conditioner. Unfortunately my fish are arriving in the male tomorrow. I just learned today about cycling. Will bio-spira or Stability work for me? Should I leave them in their shipping bag until the cycle is complete? It is a dozen small Pygocentrus nattereri. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

You cannot leave them in the bag, the ammonia will be high in there. If you can find Bio-Spira that has been refrigerated from manufacuuring to the shop, it should work but you should also get yourself ammonia, nitrite & nitrate liquid test kits, to keep an eye on the water parameters & do water changes accordingly. A Python water changing hose will be very benefitial to you for this.

What if it hasn't been refrigerated? And what if I can only find Stability? After I use one of these how long should I wait or have to wait?

Than you're aaddind dead bacteria (more waste) to your problem. What fish did you order & from where?

Biospira has worked for me a few times now and has been flawless. I had a tank crash about a year ago and my ammonia spiked as I had several floaters and the entire cycle was thrown off, a bag of biospira and it went right back on track in a day.

It must be refrigerated as they said. It is not cheap but the cost isnt nothing to the cost of dead fish :)

Get test kits so you know that everything is running right. Put the biospira in and add the fish, keep track of the water and make sure it stays stable. Come here for help!

You can always cycle the tank with the fish in it, tons of water changes etc, but I am not keen to that process and to much work. There is a lot of people for and against biospira but as I said I have never had a problem with it.

best thing you can do is to find a local hobbyist or try your local fish store and get some of their filter media to throw in your tank. If you can buy/borrow one of their established sponge filters your water will be cycled in a couple of hours.

might as well just put the fish in when you get it instead of leaving it in the bag.i highly doubt anything will happen to the fish in a brand new tank.basically jut starting a new cycle with the fish.

So unless the chemicals are refrigerated then there is no point to getting them? I believe the local pet store carries Stabilizer but it is kept on the shelf.

Anything warm on a shelf is nothing but dead bacteria. Look far & wide for refrigerated B-S. You didn't answer my other question.
