I've had him 4 months. The tank is a bit overstocked but i also skipped my wc on Sunday, nitrates normally aren't that high. The only thing that changed was I stopped feeding massivore 2 or 3 weeks ago and now i'm feeding nls pellets soaked with garlic.
I just did a 80% wc and he seems to be more active already. Lesson learned, never skip a wc.

I'd not think it is the diet, except that when I soak food in garlic, my tank water smells musky after that for a while. I imagine if a lot of that is used routinely, it may spoil water a bit plus the complicating factor of skipping a WC.

At the face value of the info given, I'd think you already guessed the reason. WC's become especially important in intentionally overstocked tanks. Your WC schedule of 50% twice a week sounds great on the surface/on average but if skipping just one can cause such problems, it may be interpreted that you don't have much safety margin. Hence, perhaps going for 75% twice weekly may prove to be more prudent.
