I probably should have explained better. Im making an in tank sump with one baffle as the overflow. I plan to paint the filter side so all you see is the display. Im thinking that's where all the confusion it's coming from the filter sock. I'm playing with the idea of a pvc stand with eggcrate and filter pads for mechanical filtration, but I'm not sure if that would work well

I would flip your baffle over and have it exit at the bottom threw the teeth. As mentioned before filter socks are the easiest way to go but I am asuming you want to conserve space in the tank so do 2 layers of 20ppi foam and a layer of 10 over lava rock. use egrate to seperate the foam from lava rock and to suspend the lava rock above the teeth hight then just paint in sides of the internal filter whatever color you want
